Well Guys and Gals,
I was getting to the point of will I stay with my current company, or will I look and see if there were some better offers out there. It's tough, having my son and wife in Russia. I was looking for something more permanent close to Europe...I am Africa-ed out, so to speak. So I went to the employer contacts section of the site, and chose six I thought would have been worth pursuing. I worked on the resume for a few days to update it, and sent it out.
I received responses from all six, immediately, asking when I would be available. All six were interested, and some were good, some not so good as far as offers. I had offers from $27 per hour to $40 per hour. One was so good, it almost doubled my salary. I could have retired in 3-4 years of steady work. I have always had a great relationship with my employer (which shall remain nameless, for professional courtesy), through thick and thin, and he has always allowed me to pursue better options, as long as I finished my work at the present time I could always better my station and do what was right for me when the time was right. He was on board with this at the present time, and he decided, that the timing was right for himself to retire, and usher in some new blood into the management side of the business. One of my co-workers will replace him, and I will step into the Operations Manager position stateside...I wouldn't do it if it wasn't worth it. 15 years overseas, sometimes I can still see the roots, other times I am flowing where the winds blow me..ya know the feeling you get sometimes at night...will I ever settle down?
In basic English boys and girls, I am hanging them up. I am throwing my tools into the garage, and my son can have them to bang on the flowerpots if he wants to... You can all take bets on how long I will last, and nobody knows that for sure except the Big Project Manager in the Sky, but I will have to let the site management settle my position here at RatpackInt.
I expect this to all take place in late May, so you never know what will happen till then. I know some of you know me well, and are saying...Office puke? Yeah, but always a Tradesman. Oh yeah...taxes too, but I'll be in the best country in the world, and have my family with me...that's better than anyone can expect. I have come a long way since I was an electrical apprentice 25 years ago that didn't know the diffence between a 1/4" fender washer and a left handed box wrench...some will get the joke, and the others...won't.
My point is...never say never, and if you want it bad enough, and if you constantly work hard enough to better yourself, and your education, good things will happen.
God Bless, and see you on the next big one.
Rover:cheers

Hi Rover, CONGRATULATIONS!!! I'm happy for you and your family and your decision. I know how hard you've worked to even put yourself in the position to have an opportunity like this. Your experience in the new job will be a huge plus for your company.

Congratulations again Rover. Maybe we'll run into each other down the road sometime.

Justus

ps--where will your home be?

Wish you the best of luck, WR, if you're able to settle down you'd be an inspiration to those of us who see this work as an ends to a means. Hope you'll continue populating the site with your helpfull tips, they're a true asset to the site.

It all comes in mixed emotions. On one hand, from what I've heard, we are loosing a true tradesman from the field, but on the other hand, we're gaining an asset from the trenches in upper management who has been there, done that, and knows what the guys/gals are going through in the field.

Congratulations from Rat Pack International and I don't forsee any changes in your status. You've always been a contributor, a knowledgable asset to us all, and I only see that continuing in the future. You'll definitely be able to convince your company of the benefits of being involved here.

My only question is, what are the 6 offers you got and when will they be posted for the others to see? :cheers

What I wanna know, Wrover, is are you gonna keep the same attire, just add a tie to it, remove just the bandanna, or what? Hope the Bostonians appreciare Carharts! Good luck, and I enjoyed working with you and with GS, of course. I enjoyed all the guys with your company, by the way.
Don't know if I am ever going back overseas, but sometimes I miss it. I never did learn how to say "no sour cream" properly in Russian. I'm bettin you can make it stateside if your wife and son can stand you being around that much.

Again, Best wishes...
