I think we all know the answer to this, but thought it would make for an interesting poll.

Next item they will want is the roomies to share the per-diem.
2 can cook as cheap as one !!!

Not a chance in hell. I have made it very clear on this site and others, plus some of the company HR folks, and I leave no doubt in any ones mind HE-- NO. :banhim

Not only that I will not! sleep in a shared tent out in the desert, not enough money to get me back in the army or the navy. :321

I will stay home with mama and drink at the local tavern!!!!

i used to work for local 195 traveling the us out of a suitcase from job to job with no per-diem. back then it was always imperitive to room up trying to cut cost all i could. my first overseas gig i feel into that same old mentality sure i'll room up why not. big mistake it'll never happen again. a grown man needs his own space to do whatever the hell he wants. plus how many sup. do you see rooming togeather. they think there better for some reason. hopefully one day they'll come to realize that without us there nothing and start treating us the way we deserve to be treated. the same exact way they would expect to be treated.

I might share a room with a boyfriend, but I doubt even that. Nope, I prefer the company of myself.
Don't think to hard about this but, I don't always get dress right after I get out of the bath. so....
Companies what's with? You are only as good as the people who work for you.
You know the rest: Take care of your workers and they will take care of you.

If the slimeball contractors that don't pay proper per diem would, this would be a non issue.
Staying in a dive and eating garbage is not what we are in this for.

This goes back to the contract and the negociations process--you don't want to share a room? Simple--cross out the section in the agreement that refers to shared rooms, housing, etc. and initial it before you sign. Either send this to the HR dept or have the cloWn across the table from you initial it and keep copies with you of all.
DON'T SIGN ON THE LINE IF YOU CAN'T DO THE TIME

The only way I have ever shared space or would ask for someone to share space is if we are renting an apartment. I would not share a room. When I was in Nicosia, I shared a flat..... it saved the company money and we got an executive suite.... It was the whole top floor of the complex.... we each had our own bathroom, still had a guest room and had a 2000 square foot pad. We bought groceries; brought girlfriends over and lived a somewhat normal life....beat the crap out of living a hotel. It worked out well on the long trip. Did the same in Sophia, Bulgaria..... Not for everyone but having a kitchen on a long trip pays dividends on per diem on a long trip..... -rob

Pay us the per diem, we will decide if we want to sleep with someone else, or not. One of my bosses asked me if I thought I had "earned the right" to not share a room, HELLL NO, I was born in the USA and I was born with that right.
Was that too political?:cheers

I thought this is what was meant when someone asked if I would share a room. My Bad.:doh

Not apartments, or houses, etc... Sharing bathrooms sucks, but if the price is right, I don't mind sharing common areas, living rooms, kitchens. But there is no way in HELL I'm sleeping in the same room as another person. Unless she's cute.

Why do we work overseas? For the money, right? If you have a chance to make more money, would you take in a roommate then? Some guys would, some wouldn't. After a 10 hour day, a person needs his or her space. So me having a roommate would be a problem. I was in Thailand in 2004, and there were guys three to room. No way in hell, should they have accepted that job. But, that's what happens when your a "greenhorn" and want to travel overseas. Before you leave the world, ask questions and check the fine print on that contract. And say no to a roommate, because you would only be saving that company money. So to all never, take a pay cut in per deim.

I'm an electrician. No, you're not me. The question was, if YOU would be willing to take in a roommate. I spent 20 plus years in the military. I had a roommate for 6 years. For me to take a job across the pond (overseas) and have a roommate, I wouldn't do it. If you were in the military the world was considered the US.

The government pays the companies full per dim for us working there, hell it's not costing them anything extra for us. They need to let us stay alone. But like the other guy said, its in your contract so if you do it is your fault. Don't wait till you get to the job and bitch.

I was under the impression that this was a workers forum.
If this allowed, I will reconsider my membership.

I hate to revive a dead topic, but I voted yes solely on my experience. When I was with KBR in Kuwait, I shared a two bedroom apartment with an office guy and it was very pleasant. Separate bathrooms, bedrooms and a common area and kitchen. Although we shared different schedules, we had our own space and a common space should we want to bullshit and watch tv. But based on some of your experiences, I'll keep my eyes peeled for those conditions.

I still say it should be up to me if I share, or not. It is perfectly fine with me if you guys bunk together, but it should be by choice. And that means YOUR choice, not some penny pincher back in the states who does NOT share, I betcha, with someone he doesn't know.

Had roommates in college, and had one on my first go-round in Kabul. I've done several since, and I vote NO.
I really don't like sharing bathrooms. I've had some real bad times with guys that have left sh#t stains on the toilet seat. That's right, the seat! Bad enough that some lazy ass won't reach down and give his stain a courtesy brush. :2cents

Yes, quite graphic. I guess their Mom or wife was not there to clean it. What foul bastards.Go to india...they shit ON the seat. Go to Africa, there is just a hole. Go to Asia...go shit in a bush. Go to Arabia, and wipe with your hand.
Now I don't want to ever eat corned beef hash again. Oh yeah, what I wanted to post about before I have to go drop off the kids at the pool....change your user name, because I now know who not to hire, because down the road, you may have an opinion, Harold, and a contractor might see your name, and pop...it goes into his black book.:cheers

Back in 93 down in Huston, Texas now I am talking about U.S. at a refinery rebuild . I keep seeing some of our fellow hands walking around with a coke botttle half full of water. Some of the water would sometimes look a little dark and come to find out they were using it in the porta can when there was no toilet papper. Finger in the ase and finger in bottle of water shake a little and there you go instant clean. What got me was they would empty the bottle by the water cooler they place all over the job. Then they would hold the bottle under the spout and refill for the next time.
I to this day never drink from job site coolers no matter how thirsty I get.:blahslap:wtf

W.R., you're point was well taken.
But, if what I have to say in this forum or any other is offensive then that is who I am.
My name is not about to change; I'll stand behind what I have to say.
If some HR person or other contractor's Rep doesn't like what I've said that is their problem not mine. I've been doing what I do for 32 years and have never minced words. That has never cost me a job.
I'd rather get it off my chest and out in the open and let the chips fall where they may.
But one thing for sure; I will ALWAYS be Harold.

I've roomed solo and with others... sometimes just one or two, sometimes up to 40 in a tent. can't say i liked it much, but it's part of the job. most of the other members are correct... negotiate your own contract and get what you deserve, but don't expect luxury accommodations for every project.
