View Full Version : Haiti
I will be coming to Haiti in mid Janurary and would like to hear from any Rats that might be there. What are the conditions, where is there to go and any safety concerns, ect.?
Thanks,
Buba
Buba,
I'm here in hell oh i mean Haiti (no it's hell) now. wher to start?
FIRST OFF this place isn't safe. When you get off the plane and leave the airport bldg. STAY in the gated area and look for the driver. he will be holding a sign with your name on it, or it might say fluor or have a number (fluor will give you the number) if needed. The local prters will try to get your bags and lead you out of the area. DON'T just tell them no and and look for the driver. He will meet you at the end of the gated area and take you to the truck (armored) just so you know.
all other caws are cool. You will be living in a man camp, it's just like a prison (guard towers and all). The camp is nicer than what I was expecting. Not conex boxs. There are a bunch of trailers set up for us, each with about 15 rooms. (one person per room). The Jobsite is right across the street from the camp. The food is ok just gets old after a while but they cook american style food, and they have a BBQ area for us. They have people that will go shopping for you for what ever you need and there have a little circle K on the camp. (but it's pricie) so if you need alot of items it's better to have them go out for you.
Oh BRING CHECKS. There is NO ATM. You can write a check to Fluor on Tue and Fri then get your cash that day. They do have outings for us. They have a van that goes to a resturant/bar 2 nights a week. They also have trips to the beach. They up Sat for an all nighter and then sun morning for the one day-ers.
The Job: The Job as a whole is going ok. Fluor is huge on safety. It's nice to see. The management seems OK, I work for a sub out here so. The locals are Pretty good. Most of them can speak some english, and a few are bi-lingual.
Well thats all I can think of right now, if I think of something else I will let you know.
See you when you get here.

Makj,
Thanks for your reply. We will be putting in the telephone system and not subing to Flour. So far as I know, we will be staying in a hotel and not the man camp, but I get the general idea of the conditions there. Hope to see you on the job and maybe at the bars. I forgot to ask, are the indoor toilets working?
Thanks,
Buba
Are you working for OBO? otherwise you will be at the camp.

My understanding of the people installing telephone systems in the embassy's are contracted to the embassies and not to OBO or the contractors. :2cents

If you only knew the half of it... per diem GONE and IF they decide to let you out for a weekend. Hell, who knowws? maybe you'll get lucky and go to kaliko....
We've been battling for months trying to get shit straight in HAITI but to no avail... state dept. allotment per diem is 246.00 after being there for 9 months there is NO MORE danger than you would find in any metropolitan area. they dont want you to see that. If you don't believe mr just go to Petionville Club one night and you will see.
If we were to slip into another ice age, there is no way in hell I would go back to Haiti...

I got my letter awhile back, allowing us ol timers to work awhile with out getting in trouble, over our retirement penshion.
My brother told me yesterday after a long time of putting every one to work, Vegas is now saying do not come for wiremen, plumbers/fitters/welders. But if you are easy going and hang around you could get out I figure. Lucky I have more to do then any ol goat should have.
I have been trying to get back to my guide service, so far I have 60 days lined up for this spring and summer in Alaska. Thats a pretty good summer run.
Now, I will see what happens in Mexico starting in the fall?
Take Care
