Lately I have gotten several comments from prospective employers who say my history in the last few years makes me a "job hopper", even though upto the end of 1997 I was employed by one company for nearly 30 years before being forced to retire. Since then I have worked for numerous companies, a couple I left because of money and benefit issues, but most were due to layoffs and downsizing. I explained that if a company hires a person as an employee and then after a project is completed and hey cut you, what are you to do. Shouldn't they look at it as if you at least have the skills, intelligence and ability to keep working rather then lay around for a year or two before working again, but of course they wouldn't like that either. Today a recruitoe who understands my background said even though they explained it in detail and that companies have given me strong approvals, the hiring prick said he didn't want to interview me, meanwhile another large company has asked me for a second phone interview. The one I wanted is close to my home, they other will require that I relocate.

Any others face this crap, basically all contractors are "job hoppers", aren't. any thoughts?

Well, this one last position is with at&t too, about 20 miles from my home. Go figger, I'm still with Harris in Florida and have a 2nd interview with Comcast in florida

I guess my issue is with the employment enviroment as it is and has been, that getting laid off isn't good for your resume because it shows too many jobs.

I am going to change my resume to state between this date and this date that it was federal contracting with different companies as required and need.

By all means I have faced this from many human resource folks and a lot of head hunters.

Oh no we can not send forth any job hoppers!!! :banghead Me to them, do you see any long periods of no work, duh - (no).

This means I am a contractor that when the work is finished, this firm may not have a place for me, I move on to another project for another firm,
simple as hell - once you get to people beyond human resources - then you can visit with some one who has a clue. This is where our contacts pages come in handy, a lot of our contacts allow you to bypass the first and the lowest person on list. Some time you get directly to the trade / craft manager....!!!!

Take Care

OK Then show me one company that is loyal to it's employees by keeping them on between jobs, giving appropriate raises so we can enjoy the fruits of life with lots of good benefits and a great retirement that they can't take away when they pay the CEO 200 million a year for nothing and can't afford to pay our retirement checks anymore. Then guarantee me a job for life, and I won't go from construction site to construction site trying to improve myself and my income. I will then have all the security I need like they used to have many years ago.:banghead NO now it's all about the company's bottom line, Never mind we have a bottom line Too just like they do.
Yes I have had that phrase thrown at me several times in the last couple of years and HATE it. :2up
If these companies want security then so do we get off the soap box and give us a company we can be proud of!!! :wtf

:cheers OK time for another couple of beers you guys are working me too hard.

Never had any trouble with overseas companies, but my resume specifies the times I was on each job. However, it has been a problem from time to time trying to secure a loan for a vehicle or house, as they think you can't hold a job, even if you explain it to them.

I was worried about the same thing when I bought my house. But, the bank people said in this day, and age, they realize people work for a lot of different companies in their working life. What they look for is someone staying in the line of work. Like a welder, or electrician with lots of years of experience in the same field, or industry, vs someone who has like 3 years as a tradesman, 2years as a teacher, 4years as a stockbroker, yadayada. They told me THAT'S what looks bad to them. Just my :2cents
