View Full Version : After Hours Work
Tradesmen,
I am just wondering what you all think about after hours work "night shift". Recently I have seen a couple of jobs that they didn't want to inconvenience the white collar types. But for a long term stint say more than a month or two come up with some way to take care of their people besides hey you’re getting a paycheck? Maybe one day off a week alternating with two day's off the following week? I know that I am not the first one to hear or see this and how did different companies deal with it?:cheers
Kinda puts a damper on going out:banghead

There have been times when I had to work off my regular shift in order not to bother the other workers. What I did find is that when I'm not worrying about the other workers being in the way I generally am more productive, especially when pulling wire into a work space, etc. I can always work on the system during regular hours, but it isn't always easy to do wire pulling (large amounts). :cheers

As far as the building trades go, work after hours, 2nd or 3rd shift work, goes with the territory. As far as overseas, it has to happen a lot, as the State people must conduct business and not be bothered by construction, especially in major hallways, executive offices, etc. As far as nightlife, an old timer once said to me...
" I didn't come here to wear old clothes and make new friends, I came here to work"
I agree with him, anyone that has a problem with working 2nd or 3rd shift overseas, stay home in the USA and work for home depot...we are here to work, not socialize. A 60 hour week is the norm, and I believe men that work 2nd and 3rd shifts should be compensated for the inconvienience. A day off is the norm too, but I have worked 7-12's for 8-1/2 months before. Not much time to socialize, but I was there for the cash, not the strip club.

First I do not understand after hours work?
Most bankers have hours of 9 to 5, truck stops have hours of 24 a day, what are after hours for a construction hand???
If you sign a normal contract does it say hours of 9am to 5pm? Are maybe it says 10 hrs a day as directed?
I am an ol prima Donna, and refuse to work any hrs but daytime, if the co. does not like that, then send me home! :wtf Just my way of living, you have to figure your way of living for yourself.
Have I ever worked a night shift? Yes if ask, but only to break in a new foreman, For short periods of time.:rockwoot:
Do I have trouble finding work? Hell No. I suggest you do what your your mind and heart tells you, if you are a master at your trade thats one thing if you are a beginner thats another deal. Days off - your decision, to a point, I have worked jobs where 12 hrs a day ever day was the norm, if you did not work friday then don't come in for Saturday and sunday double time days.:wtf
Take Care

Thanks Mexfish, That's a good reply answered my question completely.:cheers
For any whatever reason night shift occurs, I really was trying to find out if anyone here has done that for extended lengths of time IE: 2 months to a year or more. I mean for a short term definately not going to kill you but in the short term I was walking around tired and found it dificult to sleep during the day that was the other point:rockwoot:
Was just kind of curious about the long term effects on your personal well being; and later your work.:2cents

personally, I find it better to work at night, being as you usually don't have to fight with all the other crafts about who can use this tool or that one, or "who the fuck just took my pliers?"
