Something that seems to be a recurring theme on many, many posts is the ever-present mystification at decisions made by corporate management, who are quite often a zillion miles away from the Project. I certainly questioned my sanity and (32 years) experience after 14 months of the Beijing "menagerie of insanity." And 4 Antarctic winters enduring the Momma Raytheon micro-management lunacy from Denver. (some call it Teapot Tyranny)
All of us skilled tradesmen/women can tell stories about baffling (fill in the blank) decisions, but why are they so very prevalent? Simple: buy a DVD of the documentary called "The Corporation," and then you'll understand exactly why things seem to be perpetually screwed up for people in the trades- and just about everyone else as well. :banghead
Briefly, 130 years ago or thereabouts, lawyers convinced The Law that corporations have the same individual Bill of Rights as citizens, i.e., are 'people' to. Fast-forward to now: corporations determine Foreign and Domestic Policy, as well as rule over virtually every aspect of our lives. America isn't a democracy, but is ruled by 'corporatism,' another version of fascism and other 'isms' we have seen.
All corporations are ruled by The Bottom Line, and if they think that they'll make a buck by cutting off their nose, or your nose, they will.
Corporations are legal "people" but are not bound by the same laws that you and I are; they cannot be punished as 'people' are for crimes, thus, do whatever the hell they want- just so long as it brings a profit; the list goes on and on.
Suffice to say that in this movie, a PhD criminal psychologist who the FBI uses for profiling, compared the behaviour of typical psychopaths and the behaviour of corporations.
And, the World Health Organization was consulted on the same subject; both concurred: corporations have the same behaviour patterns and mental characteristics as psychopaths.
So, the next time a decision falls out of the sky, you'll know why it seemed to have made by a psychopathic baboon.
It was.

G'day (Redneck) Mike-
Corporations are all the same: amoral and greedy; no matter how much profit they make, it's never enough. No worker is viewed as a person, but is a 'hand' or a 'unit' so they think: what's the point in hiring an experienced pro when we can get a naive kid for much less per hour? Corporate "thinking" is incapable of grasping the concept of wasted time training people who don't care, and massive amounts of time spent re-working pathetic attempts to do (whatever) because the rookie has no professional pride in workmanship.
My personal theory on why a welder could be promoted out of his trade and into finish work, as well as why a guy with half the experience I have, and no experience whatsoever in management could become my foreman: they were 'promoted' to their next level of incompetence in order that their boss wouldn't look so incompetent himself.
I've seen this phenomena on the Ice, as well as other large construction corporations I've worked for in Las Vegas. They don't want pros such as you and I to run work, they want nitwits who haven't got a clue- but will obligingly toe the corporate line for a much cheaper price.
Is that retarded, or what!?
Anyway, hope your job search goes well! I'm here in NZ enjoying the summer and waiting for surgery on my wrist.

As fugged up things were out there in Beijing, I'd go back there just for the foreign travel experience and cheap stuff to buy out there. I brought back over $200 worth of extra crap from just being there for 4 months.:doh
I had to literally give Xboxes , oscillating fans and trivial electronics away to the young new guys before I flew outta there. I couldnt carry it all. :wtf

Man, is that the truth or what??
Man, is that the truth or what??
Hey,chill_mac, sounds like you we're really inpressed wif that job in China .DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING???
Chili-Mac, that was well put, and essentially what I have been saying since around 1970. Craftspeople are tools and treated like tools that are easily replaced. Corporations are really just a kind of mob. Made up of people who as individuals would probably not do some of the things they, the mob does, but in the interest of profit for the mob, (corporation) they will. Mob mentality...you may vote to hang a murderer, but could you pull the trap door? Easier to do wrong when you can justify in your mind that "it wasn't just me".
And by the way, I am FOR capital punishment, as long as someone else executes it.
