Amen, CFL, we would know, wouldn't we! When I first got there I (softly) warned people how bad it could be, but I was wrong, it was mis-managed much worse than I thought it COULD be. I liked the part where we were asked if we could terminate the fibers (all of them), roll it back on a reel, and then pull it with the copper when the copper got there....hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha.

And for all you skeptics out there, I am NOT joking about this one bit, it truly happened, and I DO think it is funny.

Now, to clarify, it was not the on-site management, he was okay, but the guy back in the states was literally, clinically, insane.

There were good craftspeople of all sorts there, but they were not allowed to perform their craft, same old story, only much worse than you can believe.

Dam, it never stops, a new case of stupidity shows up every day. And the firms wonder why the profit is not there at the end of the job.

Ignorance is no damm excuse, I was told a long time ago, you do not have to know everyt thing to be a good super, just realize who does know.

I think Tirana, was overly blessed with stupidy from MICI and Hitt.

People that do not understand fiber should not be in supervision over the work period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess in the case you talk about, you should just have jerked it out, and shoved it in with a pipe full of copper. Then asj what now?

Not only that Mex, they had the fibers terminated while the dry wallers were sanding...drywall dust is nice round little objects, impervious to light transmitted. How about installing the switches in the cabinets before all the dry wall and stuff is done? We could go on and on. Don't listen to us, you Supers, we only do this for a living, and you heard about it once on a Discovery special...or you used to have a neighbor who worked on that stuff...

I worked the tiny little shitting fibers. Until I could no longer tell colors.

At one time a short while ago, I was ( project manager arkansas ) for a company doing all the fiber in the state. Plus I overlapooed into Okalahomea.

You would not believe, well ya you probable would, Guys would call me, chief we can not pull fiber through the duct the other company installed. I would go look and call the office who the hell installed the duct on this f------ project?:wtf

I would have it dug up many times it would have mulriple 90* bends and yes , 180 bends. I would take pictures and send to the office in Texas, their answer well try to make it work. Sound familiar?

Take care

Yes, very familiar, Mex. Bend radius is a big deal, but a lot of guys, even the ones terminating the fiber, are not aware, or don't think about it until it comes time to test...

...BUT the popular belief is that telecom is not a craft or a skill, anybody can do it, my brother in law can do it, he works on car batteries!

Oops found myself climbing back up on the soap box...

Boy,this sounds contagious!!!!! AND OUT OF CONTROL!!!! I'm thinkin that it is a case of the sups being PUPPETS!!!! YO KNO YES MEN ,INSTEAD OF MEN OF INTEGERITY ,TO DO GOOD WORK!!!! I ran into this in Beijing and got my BUTT ,in a mess w/ sups that didn't know even about sandin sheetrock, but when they wanted me to TEACH KIDS to do a Trade THEY CAME UP AND PUT THEIR 2 CENTS IN. I asked my FOREMAN HOW MANY JOBS HE HAD SANDED ,HIS REPLY WA 2 at his house, and then had it textured!!!! NEEDLESS TO SAY I GOT WROTE UP THA DAY!!!!OH BY THE WAY HE IS A WELDER!!!!OVER FINISH CREW!! NOW FIGURE THA OUT??????FOREMANS USED TO BE PUT INTO POSITION BY MERIT!!!!!

Pops

I guess to sum my my main problem is that I have always believed that doing things right the FIRST time will save time in the long run. And on these projects the main focus of the sups is gettting it done as FAST as possible, which leads to so much re-work, work-arounds, and total chaos, that it would have been faster to do it right the FIRST time. The thought seems to be "do something, even if it is wrong". Frustrating when all the techs can see what should be done, or needs to be done, and are made to do something "quick". I don't see it changing in the near future. It is a direct result, in my opinion, of OBO's milestones and pay depending on milestones being met, regardless of how much it costs to redo.....shit, here I am on the box again...time for another cup of

back to CLF's question....does any one know? (I thought you were a pipefitter/HVAC guy, CFL!)

hey pops sounds like the second floor in armenia how many days did it take to fix the fiber cabinet HIS WAY and then getting yelled at for milking the job then how many did it take OUR WAY i hear he is a program manager for commtech on DS jobs :wtf

Pops
02-10-07, 03:55 AM
Ha, that is a prime example, CFL, within 5 minutes of you looking at the cabinets, you had the plan formulated to fix the goat roping that was there. I agreed 1000% that was the way to do it, but the RCDDDD with 3 weeks experience wouldn't let us do it "our way", I suspect because he really did not understand it. He was sure not happy with our progress trying to do it his way! You know before that I supported that guy and tried to promote him to the rest of the crew saying, "he's new, give him some slack", etc, and what did I get for it? The proverbial knife in the back. He said he could take one look at a person and judge whether they knew what they were doing or not. Natch, you got any comments on that?

It is a prime example of 3 weeks training is no substitute for years out where the rubber meets the road.

...and I don't care where he is as long as he is not running my job. I think he had a case of trying to impress people who knew more than he did, with knowledge he did not have. Were you there when he was tying a bundle of cable to be pulled through a pipe with mule tape? I asked innocently enough, if he knew how to tie it. He said Hell yes, he knew how to tie knots. Then it came untied when it was 6ft short of the end of the pipe. So we spent a couple extra hours on that Sunday morning pulling the wire back, refishing and repulling. We got the wire in, DDB and I were assigned to test this wire and make it pass, it was on the edge of the distance parameter. Then he was frustrated because we weren't doing it fast enough to make up for the 2 hours he had cost us by not being able to tie a knot.

Pops and any of the rest of you cable techs...
I used to pull cable for you techie types and the like 7 yrs ago. I would love to pull again. I am a little 5'9 (skinny enuff) fella able to get in the rafters and strong legged enuff to pulll the mule with one other fella on outside pole to pole pulls. I am not a fiber man. I do know better than to bend it and break it, and I would love the opportunity to be a great helper again. If ya'll know where this kinda work can be found let me know. I am looking for my next contract anywhere warm (preferably) but I will suffer the cold desert theatre again if I have to. Headed to Mexico to stay tax exempt now.

Try Zachry, I know they are or shortly be doing the telecom cabling, the Super & PM want to do it in house and not sub it out. I almost took it but my family wanted me to work state side.

If Zachry is doing the telecom soon I wonder who they will use? The concrete people or the rodbusters? It would make too much sense to use telecom people or even electricians, thats too close to their trade.

Zachry is contracting it out in Nicaragua and Beijing, not sure with whom, however they are self performing the work in Quito as they did in Phnom Penh, at this point. I turned down the work due to family matters, however I would recommend the job. You would make more working directly for them then you would working for a subcontractor. Iff it wasn't for family issues I would be there right now. They have a good team there, they treated me fair and I was paid what I was promised. The Super may already have who he needs, but you can always apply.

Geez Painter, I was just poking at you :cheers I think we've been around that issue several times. The teleco side is hurting because pops and me aren't on the job, we're doing good at home or close to home right now. I saw it many times at Phnom Penh, I would have rather have had the floor sweeper help me then the guy who was there when I first arrived and I helped him pack when he first said he was dragging up :rockwoot: But there were many times when I couldn't do what I needed to do because either the electricians or builders weren't done with rooms, etc. So I might have to help who ever to get it done, plus it kept me employed. There were times when I needed help pulling wire and the electricians were either too busy adjusting the screws on the wall plates  or the painters were too busy watching the paint dry :sport002: but in the end we all wanted to get the project completed and have our brews :cheers :cheers . I worked with a bunch of great guys and yes, even Batman would like to tour the city on Sundays. My position is and has been that you can't always be doing just your trade, sometimes the others always can use a talented teleco type like Pops and me to get them starightened out.

I currently work with bamma boy and we are working in ghana together and he mentioned this. my name is skyler and i worked in barbados for 6 months under stronghold eng. inc. where do i start? they ordered hot melt kits for epoxy connectors. we had those $.50 scopes. we had carpenters, welders, and sheetrockers pulling copper and fiber on several of the floors. we did not get perdiem for a month. we had to report to an electrician even though we had a pm. everything would be going well, and the the owner, scott, would come in and try to take the entire job over. he fired me in feb. of last year because of lack of work. good call huh? he blames the fiber failing on me, but it couldnt be that i was because of other people pulling, dust, or bad scopes. the only good thing about the company was the 375 a day perdiem and 30 an hour. the onsite management was good but they changed every 6 months. the before mentioned incident of them trying to get us to pull the fiber and terminate to recoil and pull again later is true. the day we got the copper onsite, not decertified, but onsite, they wanted to know how much was pulled and then complained when we said none. we asked for alcohol for the fiber and then went and bought it locally and let them know. the still got 2 2 gallon containers for $10 each, then shipped it in special containers $60 each, then paid for shipping $100 each, then paid for customs at 200% each. so they paid $600 for 4 gallons of alcohol. in the middle of pulling osp, scott pulls off the reel guy for something without telling me and another guy who where pulling our asses off. there is more but i just cant remember since it was over a year ago. in short (im about out of toom) they suck.
