Well, several of us "Rats" here have experience in Angola (the New Embassy building was built there in 2004-2005) and would be more than happy to help you out on your decision to go or not. I was there for six months and would be happy to help out. Let us know what you might have going on there, and we'll be happy to throw in our two cents.

Well I have a friend that was one of our project managers at Weatherford that is over there working for Chevron. He's the one that originally said I should think about working overseas. I pretty much blew it off but when the woman I replaced at my present job got on with Fluor Daniel working in Kazakhstan told me how much she made I almost peed my pants!
I'm darn good at what I do, I work my rear off and go above and beyond whats required of me for a fraction of what she is making!
It's not even just about the money:fauches: ...I truely love my job and the people I work for think I'm all that, but I just want to learn more!
I'm at a point in my life where I'm free to do something like this. I'm hungry for the knowledge and the experience. I want to go further/deeper into my career, my sweet hubby has given me the green light now all there is to do is find that company that can use me talents!
My girl in Kaz said I could come there but I'm not liking what I hear on the news these days...my buddy in Angola said they've lost some guys to Kaz cause they are paying so much. He said,"trust me you don't want to go to Kaz, It's much better (the compound) here than there."
Down side? I'm not thrilled about the possibility of contracting Malaria, or 14 hour flights, possible unrest of the locals...etc...but not enough to keep me from going given the chance.
I got lots of questions though...I know nothing about working overseas..I'm counting on you good people to guide me along the way. I don't know wheather to subscribe now or wait to see how Angola pans out.
What are some other good places to work overseas?

We have "trained" several new people on the ways of how to get overseas, what to do while there, and how to just get along.
Mercyschild, you almost peed your pants over what they were paying in Kazakstan? Sheesh. Where you been working?
....and don't be fooled by the 14 hour flights (short), the malaria, or the other benefits, some of it is not that pretty at all.

I hope your talking about Luanda? About the only place in the country that is even 1/2 way safe and comfortable. It has to 2 - 5 star hotels, I have staid in both and prefer the Meridan at the bay.
Do not let anyone fool you the place is not safe to walk around at night.
I would go back under the right pay and expense program.:wtf
Take Care

Oh puleeze! I work for crap! I don't even make 40K a year!
and I'm way tired of it! Compared to what I make they are paying a small fortune in my eyes.
Well I'd like to hope I'm brave enough to do it should it be offered...I'm pretty darn adventurous and I'll try anything once.
Is there no women out there that work overseas on a regular basis? Or am I just an odd ball?

Actually, there are some, not a whole lot in the Embassy world, and I can't really speak for the Oil/Gas/Power world. There are a couple on here as well.

Do your homework on the country involved and on the company. Don't believe everything you read on here, some guys will complain about everything, when actually the job isn't too bad. Going to a dangerous place should definitely have better pay, but make sure the hours worked are worth it if your putting in, let's say 12 hr days 7 days a week. Usually its straight time overseas and not time and a half. As for diseases like malaria, something like that can be prevented by taking pills, and for others, there are shots required which the company should pay for. Check out the state dept's website to see travel advisories and recommended vaccinations. And lastly, probably most importantly, always follow the rules that OBO lays out for you, if you don't, its a guaranteed ticket home without your clearance. Thats my :2cents
